ZIONVILLE – A fatal two-vehicle collision occurred on US 421 in Zionville, Watauga County, on Monday, September 28th, leading to the death of a Tennessee woman. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated the incident, which took place at approximately 9:59 a.m. near the intersection with Mabel School Road.
The collision involved a Ford F250 pickup truck and a Hyundai Kona. According to the investigation conducted by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the Ford F250 was traveling northbound on US 421 when it reportedly crossed the centerline of the roadway. This movement placed the Ford F250 directly in the path of the oncoming Hyundai Kona, resulting in a head-on impact between the two vehicles.
The driver of the Hyundai Kona, identified as Carol Geiger, 67, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, suffered critical injuries in the severe collision. Despite emergency efforts, Ms. Geiger tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the crash.
The driver of the Ford F250, Henry Bontrager, 64, of Ellenboro, sustained minor injuries in the collision. Following the incident, emergency medical services (EMS) transported Mr. Bontrager to Watauga Medical Center for treatment and evaluation of his injuries.
The State Highway Patrol’s initial investigation into the circumstances of the crash aimed to determine potential contributing factors. After assessing the scene and gathering information, investigators concluded that neither excessive speed nor driver impairment played a role in causing the fatal collision. These charges include Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle, Careless and Reckless Driving, Left of Center, and No Operator's License.
