Boone, N.C. – A historic building on Blowing Rock Road has been revitalized with the opening of The Mountaineer Tavern, a new restaurant infused with Appalachian State University spirit. The establishment, which officially opened its doors in July, aims to serve students, alumni, and local residents with a menu featuring rotating daily specials, a variety of main dishes, and cocktails.
The building housing The Mountaineer Tavern has a significant place in Boone's history, according to Preston Dishman, the daily operations manager. Dishman, a Boone native, recalled the building's past as a Hardee’s during his childhood, a place he frequented countless times. More recently, it was home to Boonies, a Chicago-style deep-dish pizza restaurant. The property then remained vacant for approximately 18 months to two years before an agreement was reached for its rehabilitation and the new tavern's development.
Extensive renovations preceded the tavern's reopening. Dishman stated that the primary goal for the new space was to establish an environment that honored the community's roots. This vision is realized through numerous photographs displayed throughout the restaurant, showcasing App State's mascot Yosef across the years, alongside highlights from the university's athletic teams. Dishman noted that the sports department assisted in curating some of these memorable moments.
The atmosphere is carefully crafted to appeal to a broad audience, extending beyond current university students. Connor Deal, an Appalachian State alumnus and "sauce manager" at the tavern, reported positive feedback from local residents. These locals, Deal explained, have expressed appreciation for the unique blend of a university-centric environment with "high-level dining." He described the experience of creating something new and exceeding expectations as truly exciting.
With the return of students and fans for Appalachian State football season rapidly approaching, The Mountaineer Tavern staff is actively preparing for one of the busiest times of the year. Cole James, a staff member, confirmed the restaurant's focus on App State and its readiness for the upcoming season, anticipating a vibrant, spirit-filled atmosphere for games. Despite the expected increase in patrons and demands, the team at The Mountaineer Tavern feels well-equipped to manage the hustle. Deal emphasized the staff's "fantastic attitude," acknowledging that while there will be substantial work, everyone is approaching it with enthusiasm and enjoyment.
Dishman articulated the tavern's aspiration to become a consistent gathering spot for the entire App State and Boone community. This includes not only students and alumni but also the broader population of Boone. He expressed excitement about being an integral part of the community and witnessing the commencement of both the athletic and academic years for the tavern's staff, partners, and the university as a whole.
For Deal, The Mountaineer Tavern also represents an opportunity to contribute to Boone’s ongoing history. Deal envisions former students bringing their own children to the tavern, sharing stories of their time there.
