Appalachian State University’s soccer team achieved a historic milestone with a 1-0 victory over Georgia State University in their first Sun Belt Conference game, played at home. The win marked the Mountaineers’ eighth consecutive game without a loss, establishing the longest unbeaten streak in the program’s history.
Coming into the match, the stakes were significant for both teams. The Mountaineers held an impressive 5-1-2 record and were on a seven-game unbeaten streak, a record previously tied in the 2005 and 2007 seasons. Georgia State also entered the contest in strong form, with a 5-2-1 record and a five-game unbeaten streak of their own, setting the stage for a competitive conference opener.
The first half of the game proved to be a defensive struggle for both sides. Teams found it challenging to create scoring opportunities and maintain possession. App State committed two fouls, while Georgia State was whistled for three fouls. The Mountaineers earned five corner kicks in the first half, though none resulted in shots on target.
The deadlock was broken early in the second half. In the 48th minute, redshirt junior defender Hayden Petrick delivered a pass to junior midfielder Ellie Garrison, who then scored with a header, giving App State the decisive lead. This marked Garrison’s fourth goal of the season, while Petrick recorded her fourth assist.
Following the goal, the Mountaineers maintained their momentum and intensity throughout the remainder of the second half. By the end of the match, App State had totaled 12 shots, with eight of them accurately placed on target, and earned eight corner kicks. Georgia State's goalkeeper, Alondra Iriarte, put in a strong performance with six saves, though forward Abby Batts was the only Georgia State player to register a shot on target.
The 1-0 final score not only secured a vital conference win for the Mountaineers but also cemented their place in program history with the new eight-game unbeaten streak. The team's record now stands at 6-1-2.
