The deadline to register to vote in North Carolina for the upcoming general election on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, is fast approaching. Eligible residents must register by Friday, October 9, to participate in the election.
There are two primary ways for eligible individuals to register to vote in North Carolina. Voters can complete a registration form and submit it by mail. This application must be signed and then sent to the appropriate county board of elections. Alternatively, existing North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) customers have the option to update their registration using the online voter registration application. This online service allows them to update their address or party affiliation.
For voters who are already registered, it is possible to update their name, address, and party affiliation. This can be done by using the voter registration application form or by utilizing the change form found on their existing voter registration card. Once submitted, voters can verify that their registration information is accurate and up to date by using the voter search tool. This tool also provides access to their polling place, party affiliation, absentee ballot information, and more.
North Carolina offers an early voting period, which runs from October 15 through October 31. Early voting concludes at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 31. During this window, voters can cast their ballots at any early voting site within their county. A notable feature of the early voting period is the allowance for same-day voter registration. This means eligible individuals can register to vote and cast their ballot at the same time. However, same-day voter registration is not permitted on Election Day itself.
To register and vote on the same day during the early voting period, individuals must have resided in the county where they are registering for at least 30 days before Election Day. They are required to complete and sign a North Carolina voter registration application and must provide proof of where they live. Acceptable proof of residence includes any document that contains the voter’s current address.
On Election Day, November 3, voters are required to cast their ballots at their assigned polling place, which is determined by their home address. Voters can find their precinct by providing their home address, city, state, and zip code, or by searching by county and precinct.
North Carolina voters will be asked to show a photo identification when they check in to vote. However, all voters are allowed to vote with or without an acceptable photo identification. If a voter cannot present an acceptable photo ID when voting in person, they can still vote by filling out an ID Exception Form. Absentee voters also have the option to complete an ID Exception Form to submit with their ballot. A list of acceptable photo IDs for voting is provided by the North Carolina State Board of Elections.
In the November 2026 election, North Carolina voters will cast votes for a comprehensive range of offices, including President/Vice President, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Governor, Council of State, State Senate, State House, Judicial Offices, District Attorney, and various County Offices.
Voters looking for a sample ballot can access one through the voter search tool. By entering their first and last name, then clicking on voter details, they can scroll down to find “Your Sample Ballot.” Additionally, a sample ballot can be practiced and downloaded using “Option 4” on the NC Absentee Ballot Portal. For any questions regarding their voter information or the process, individuals are advised to contact their county board of elections.
