Professional boxer Kishawn Porter, 23, has been arrested in Mesa, Arizona, and is facing a first-degree murder charge following allegations he beat and killed his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son. Authorities also say Porter abused his own 1-year-old child. Mesa police said the situation began Tuesday when paramedics responded to an apartment for a child in medical distress. First responders transported the toddler to a hospital, where the child later died from injuries.
Doctors at the hospital noted suspicious bruising across the child’s body and subsequently contacted police, which initiated a homicide investigation. Investigators identified Porter, a professional fighter, as the suspect in the case.
Authorities said that while Porter is a professional fighter, bruising found across his knuckles did not stem from training or competition, but rather from fatal child abuse. During Porter's initial court appearance, a prosecutor with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said Porter "hit and punched the 2-year-old victim multiple times." Porter was taken into police custody on Tuesday.
An autopsy conducted Wednesday by the Maricopa County medical examiner revealed catastrophic internal trauma on the 2-year-old victim. This trauma included both healing and acute rib fractures, a lacerated liver, and a lacerated stomach, with blood found pooling in the abdomen. Court records stated it takes "a substantial amount of force to lacerate the stomach," and the injuries were all consistent with child abuse. Based on the injuries, court records further noted, "no one could have survived the severity."
Forensic experts observed that the presence of healing rib fractures in the child pointed to a pattern of ongoing violence in the home, suggesting it was not an isolated incident. Dr. Roy Lubit, a forensic psychiatrist specializing in child abuse cases, commented on the severity of the alleged actions, noting that "beating and killing an infant indicates an almost basic lack of humanity." Dr. Lubit added that an individual who would do the acts alleged would almost be overwhelmingly likely to be a psychopath.
In addition to the charges related to the 2-year-old, detectives said Porter also abused his own 1-year-old child. These alleged acts included spanking, hitting the child in the mouth, and slapping the torso and rib cage. Formal charges regarding these allegations involving the 1-year-old have not yet been submitted to prosecutors.
During Porter’s court appearance, prosecutors outlined a violent juvenile history, informing the judge that Porter has prior adjudications for child molestation and aggravated assault involving a restrained victim. A judge subsequently set Porter’s bond at $1.5 million. Following his arrest, two combat sports promotions announced they had cut ties with Porter due to the severity of the charges.
